I’m not even the biggest fan there is of Kubrick’s Shining, but it’s undoubtedly superior. King is too attached to this story and these characters, unwilling or unable to make the changes and cuts needed to make it thrive in a visual medium. And he’s just not a screenwriter- there’s loads of exposition, schmaltzy dialogue, and baffling choices like Tony being a floating teenager instead of a figure we can’t see. Weber does a decent job, but there’s bumps like his scene with the manager and some of his insanity that are as awkwardly performed as most of this cast.

I appreciate what the story is trying to achieve, I can see the emotions in abstract, but the pacing is a drag and those endings (there are multiple) go on and on, afraid of leaving things too dark. This isn’t in conversation with the novel, but with the Kubrick film, going even further than the novel to defend and explain Jack. I know it’s a personal story to King, but it makes for a worse one here. It cuts down the atmosphere, scares, and surreality. That’s another thing- it’s just not scary. I know why he’s there and what he represents but a guy in a normal werewolf mask is just not scary, not with this presentation. It’s not a total trainwreck, but it’s not first class either. There’s no reason to watch it when you can have a better stay elsewhere.
