So it's in Japan and speaking in Japanese - great!
It envolves the Portuguese Empire and Portuguese people speak English? Come on, you could have tried more and i totally agree with the respect for Japanese language, but no respect for the Portuguese language? I didn't even finish watching the first episode - very disappointing.

@fcosta I think the difficulty is that a large part of the show is the lack of shared language. For the English speaking market that would mean all of it would be in subtitles - which is fine - but all of the subtitles would need to be prefixed with [In Japanese] and [In Portugese]. Kinda makes it hard to follow for the English speaking market. I don't think it's about respecting the Portugese language it's about comprehension. <br /> <br /> That being said, I think if you can get past that, it's a really good show.

@fcosta they acknowledged in the podcast they make some concessions for simplicity (e.g. Portuguese speaking people speak English for the viewers)

@moistmakerr Hi and thanks for your reply!<br /> <br /> I'm a little disappointed on the show because of that - i mean they had a great opportunity to make the show as it should be, but they did it just half way: Japanese speak Japanese, Portuguese speak English!!<br /> <br /> They have English audio available, so English speaking market don't have to read subtitles, but no Portuguese audio (only Portuguese from Brasil) - but i have no interest in this, i wanted to see the show using the languages of the respective countries, and we have to agree that Portuguese is losing in this regard - no balance between Japanese and Portuguese here :expressionless:<br /> <br /> Also, i'm sure there would be no need to prefix the subtitles with anything, as Japanese is very different from Portuguese <br /> <br /> Maybe i'll give it a try when i'm not so disappointed...

@conradseba Well, they have to read the subtitles when Japanese people speaks, but they can also change the hole show to English audio - just choose that in the options screen <br /> <br /> I just wish the show would be more faithful in this regard...

@fcosta Dude! We have to read enough with all the Japanese.... I'm sure in Portugal it IS in Portugese... but we have to read enough when they are speaking Japanese.... use your imagination a little, he's trying to learn Japanese... he already knows Portugese.

@fcosta Is nobody in this thread going to point out that the actors would also need to speak Portuguese or at least deliver their lines properly for this little fantasy of yours to work? Why make it harder on everyone in production and the viewers just to please a small percentage of viewers that could understand it without reading subtitles. It's the same as it was in the show Vikings, they establish that the characters are speaking a language that is not English, but for the sake of the production and actors it is spoken in English.

@purpierain I think pre-rating is fine considering I go to regular Dutch commercial prepremieres which are often days-week prior to regular release and Trakt often doesn't include those at first, but maybe new titles shouldn't publish a rating until the first listed premiere.

What a boring show, it builds up to a huge battle and then you never see it. Toronaga allows friends and family to be killed all for his master plan, which looks more like bad writing than a thought out idea. Every episode finished and each time I would make excuses that it’s all leading up to something important or something exciting was coming up only to be let down. All that reading for nothing

"All that reading for nothing"<br /> <br /> Says the guy who sat on his couch and watched a TV show adapted from a 1,152 page novel. Yikes. Sorry you had to read a few lines of subtitles! Don't work those braincells too hard little buddy!<br /> <br /> By the way, it's rude to post unmarked spoilers at this level of comments. Do you see anyone else here discussing the finale? No. Go to the comment section of the final episode for that, or mark your spoiler as a spoiler. Just because the show went WAY above your head doesn't mean you should go on here and ruin it for other viewers.

Triggers one of my pet peeves in that it shares a language inconsistency with Scorsese's _Silence (2016)_, whereby Portuguese is spoken in English, yet Japanese dialogue remains Japanese. Both are as a result inhibited from achieving something truly great.

@jl0017 WELLLL the year 1600 itself actually still belongs to the 16th century (because there was no year 0, it went straight from -1 to 1) but because the story starts in 1600 and only goes forward from there I thought it was more accurate to say 17th century. All in all just a crapload of smartassery, really :hugging:

@superkloton Oh, I see. So it catches one year of 16th century, but the bulk of the story is the subsequent century (so it makes sense to consider it on the 17th one really). No, no, not smartassery at all. :joy: Quite the opposite, I love learning these nerdy and interesting details and I don't see getting corrected as an annoyance, but as a great chance learn. Thank you :heart: In this particular case, it's even something quite useful that can easily come up in day-to-day conversation.

@jl0017 The English is Portuguese on the show. It's not rocket science, it's just so we don't have to watch 10 episodes of subtitles with actors from Portugal.

@jl0017 Yeah, that's how english market shows work. <br /> <br /> Weirder bit is that English represents more than one language. The main dude is at least speaking English and Portuguese at different points, but they're both spoken as English so it's unclear which is which in conversations.

@kuuzo What's not rocket science is understanding that you either go 100% English and have the Japanese characters also speaking it or 100% native, not this half-measured nonsense. What exactly would be so wrong with having 10 subtitled episodes with Portuguese actors??? <br /> So 10 episodes of subtitled Japanese is "no problem, okey-dokey ", but Portuguese is where we draw the line :raised_hand:? Are subtitles a foreign and somehow very painful concept to people? Is reading hard? Can they only handle 60% of subtitled runtime before headaches? Non-native speakers have been consuming content for years with them just fine. It certainly beats cryptic foreign, mumbly/low diction accents and grunts in terms of clarity and intelligibility.

@kuuzo And actually the English is English AND Portuguese simultaneously on the show, which makes it even sillier, specially when they say they are speaking another language and continue in the same manner.

@jl0017 Convince an American production company to finance a 10 episode series with all foreign actors and no Americans, based on a book written in English based on an English pilot. I'll wait. Every time a production comes out that uses some English so that it can be produced, people come out of the woodwork to whine. This is such an old, whiny argument. Just enjoy it.
