Before every show needed irreverent shoved into its Netflix tags, this show was irreverent. A show focused on comedy at all costs, burning down all bridges, houses, and any people in its immediate sightline. To me it is the live action Archer, if it was played a little more straight and their H Jon Benjamin was Adam Scott’s Greg House-esque Henry Pollard. The show’s main point is comedy, but it has a necessary understanding that you need an arc, a human component, so that you can keep giving a shit while the show tells its jokes. Henry and Casey are the main plotline, and the secondary, less serialized plot is every character’s chosen profession. Ron’s business goals, Kyle’s acting, Constance’s acting, and Roman’s ability to be the worst. Roman is one of the only accurate representations of the incel nerd, and it's so accurate in how toned down it is (initially) that it worries me.

Party Down makes me regret not being a degenerate. That’s a bad line to segue into after the Roman thing, but I mean the idea of working a dead-end job, taking ecstasy and abusing vicodin, having big goals, getting in a sloppy relationship. I went from highschool to a fairly boring college life with about 5 friends total, and I graduated early. This is not praise-bait, this is a condemnation of myself. I wish everyday that I did a bunch of dumb shit and seeing this show, filled with dumb people acting irresponsibly, makes me wish I had blacked out more than twice in college. The moral of the show in the end is that success is random and happiness is unrelated to it. The other moral is to be funny.
