I didn't read the light novel, and it seems like it throws some jokes in there you'd only get if you read it. Watching the anime only, it seems to abandon the plot completely in just a couple episodes, and then turns into a, frankly, pretty lame harem comedy. The later episodes to try to tie the plot back in do nothing of the sort, and you end up realizing you've wasted five hours that could have been spent watching something better.
