It's a 90s action adventure tv show with fanservice that reimagines Greek mythology.

It manages to balance macho masculinity with sensitive masculinity, along with being righteous with a good and forgiving heart.

Surprisingly, reimaginations of Greek mythology with this kind of breadth is rare in media. This show and its spinoff Xena went on for seasons, and there's no other show that's similar in size that i know that reimagines so much of Greek mythology and has so many adventures in its era. The TV show Supernatural reimagines a lot of mythologies and is set in modern day.

The closest similar setup i can think of is the Percy Jackson books and movie series, but that follows teenagers as its main characters and the size of the stories don't compare to the Hercules and Xena shows.

I think that's part of why these shows were so popular; because we were seeing something that is actually rare; a large scale reimagining of Greek mythology, along with the other major aspects i mentioned at the start of this comment.

There's all manner of villains; gangs, armies, creatures, gods, demi-gods, warriors, cults, cursed items etc.

I love how legendary Hercules is throughout the land, and there's always the surprise from people when they realize they're in the midst of Hercules, a legendary demi-god known for helping people across the land and is a man of the people and a savior of people. I like how often their demanor changes a lot when they realize they're talking to Hercules.

It's an inspiring family show, but there's still killings, darkness and dark themes in various episodes. Plus fanservice. The show is effective at offering escapism from all the bullshit in the real world and that is in other shows, which makes more sense considering its from the 90s which was a generally more optimistic time, before the somewhat overtaking of cynicism with 9/11 and the era that followed.

Hercules basically a superhero show of the 90s, yet Hercules isn't overpowered like a superhero but is still overpowered because he's a demigod.

The cheesy stuff and jokes and fanservice and special effects (though sometimes they're good) is part of the charm.

There's episodes of generic action adventure mythology, but there's also a lot that are genuinely quite good pieces of storytelling. Not every episode is standalone, sometimes there's a two parter or returning characters show up.

The main supporting characters are really good. Iolaus, Salmoneus, and even Xena got her own show that became even more successful.

Be sure to watch the tv movies that set up the show, as some are quite good, even the one partially comprised of previous clips.
