There's a good and interesting story/movie/miniseries to be made of Norwegian Crown Princess Märtha's efforts and influence in the White House/on FDR in the run-up to the U.S.'s involvement in WWII when much of the nation still saw it as "Europe's problem," but this ain't it. Started OK enough but quickly goes downhill from there, slowly transforming into a full-on soap opera before your very eyes (FDR's secretary/side-piece catches FDR planting one on Märtha while she's, what, scuttling around the White House, storms out of the room as Märtha chases after her and the secretary freakin' has a gd stroke and dramatically falls to the ground in the middle of the White House hallway puhhhhleaze) Kyle MacLachlan so terribly miscast as FDR, who _so_ couldn't pull off the weird hammy tone they were taking with the FDR character. Every scene with FDR just brings the show to a screeching halt that made me question why I was continuing to watch this show Also can't get over the weirdass way royals wave

This is a series created for Norwegian Television but adopted by Masterpiece Theatre to be brought to America. It tells an interesting piece of history and it is worth the watch just for that. I am not a fan of Kyle MacLachlan so that may have flavoured how I was off put by the relationship between FDR and the Crown Princess. What really spoke to me was the journey from helplessness to heroine of the protagonist and I think it will resonate especially with women who will understand her struggles more personally than men might. It wasn’t a binge watch for me, it was a little too slow and heavy but I do recommend it to anyone who loves historical retelling of WW Ii stories. I give this series a 7 (good) out of 10 [Historical Drama]

[NRK] It tries to humanize the characters so much that it cannot avoid falling into sentimentality and chauvinism, but curiously it does a disservice to historical characters like Princess Märtha by inventing an unbelievable romantic relationship with President Roosevelt. An uninspired example of & More
