I like horror movies, even the bad ones, and this my friends is a doozy, which I don't particularly like (go figure). The writing is poor and the performances bad. The final girl, in that respect, is terrible. The only two notable performances are Jackson and Leto, with the former being markarbly better.
Possibly Leto's performance was affected by the material in the end, as he is a key player in the story and having much more screen time wouldn't have helped.
If this is an accurate representation of college in America (which I suggest it wouldn't be), god help us all. How any of them would have got in is beyond me. The aforementioned take on college students aside, the writing overall is abysmal. Treat your audience with some respect, given the movie is called Urban Legend I'm sure we are all aware of what we're in for. The exposition involved in every legend is beyond idiotic, you're making a horror movie! Show, don't tell! If you do a good job in that there is no needed for exposition. I was off on the wrong foot with this movie from the very start, and I'm not sure if it was written into the script, or as a result of the direction. But the singing in the opening scene is not needed, it's not funny in the opening of the scene
and when it comes back around for the climax, it takes away any sense of suspense and terror and ultimately just makes it laughable.
Contrast this with the film they were trying to mimic, Scream (1996). They knew their opening was their hero scene, they treated it with the respect and delivered possibly the most memorable opening sequence in horror, they set the tone for the entire movie. The opening sequence was Urban Legend's hero scene too. While I would say it did do a good job in setting the tone for the movie (utter garbage), they needed to treat it with more respect. They had a great premise, that could have delivered great suspense, terror and dread. What we ultimately got was laughable and forgettable.

Anyway, I've waffled on too much about this. I put it in the same catergory as Batman and Robin, I'll watch it again. Just for a laugh.
