So straight up, if the only thing you want to know is "is it as good as the original?". The answer to that is for me at least, unfortuatly no.

It does have a lot of the dumb fun, contrived situations and cheese of the original. It does have more accurate weather terminology, used in a lot of the correct situations than the original.

So what makes it not as good as the 1996 classic, for me it was a few things. First of, the majority of the cast lacked either the character or the charisma of the original cast with the exception of Glen Powell. Now I can't tell you if that was a writing thing or an acting thing, but it was one of the more noticable things lacking compared to the original.

The other two things I noticed as detractors, too much visible cgi where the original due to it being made in 1996 used a lot more practical effects or minitures for those mid range and close up shots of damage and destruction, the cgi took a bit of that feel away and the final thing, which is entirely subjective was the score and soundtrack.

The score felt kinda nothing vs the very pace driven of the original (slow and ominous into fast pace high tempo), which cut to some great chase songs that were the tempo of the scene. This one, while the type of music isn't as enjoyable for me on a subjective level, I think it also lacked that pace and tempo driving of the original.

So if you are going to see this, check first if Kill is showing at your local and see that instead, but if it's not this can be a fine 2x beer movie.
