The movie begins interesting, promising a quite intriguing story and it ends in a superb way. However, and this is very unfortunate, every thing in between is mediocre, partly even worse: the plot has holes (e.g. why and how do the rebels know about Brightwood after going underground and turning even their cellphones off, why is Joe the AI professor suddenly leading military troops or why are a few single cores for PINN hooked up to some rag-tag equipment in a desolated building enough to analyze Will's mind?), the story is mostly predictable and the performance of the support cast is poor (especially Max (Paul Bettany) and Bree, but also the wooden and lifeless Joe (Morgan Freeman)). All these weaknesses along with same hilarious assumptions regarding quantum- / super-computers and AI make it sometimes nearly unbearable to continue watching Transcendence.

However, as mentioned in the introduction, the ending is superb and makes up for a lot. As a fan of Nolan's films a have to say I am quite disappointed in his 2014 work: Transcendence is nowhere near Prestige, Insomnia / Memento or the Dark Knight movies and Interstellar is the even bigger disappointment! I really hope that his future work will improve again!!!

Bright wood wasn't a secret, they had viral videos online to recruit. So the "rebels" knew about them, this was not a plot hole. Joe was not leading the military, the FBI was overseeing PINN, Joe was the director of PINN. That really short dude was leading the military, this was not a plot hole. It's science fiction, how the heck would we know how many "cores" it would take to analyze a mind, besides we have no idea how many processing cores where in each of those. This is not a plot hole.

There was one humongous plot hole however. Why not give the virus to one of the hundreds of anonymous volunteers that where being assimilated. There was no reason to give Evelyn the virus at all.

@blakblu:
1) Well yes, there are videos online about Brightwood. But how would the rebels watch them or know about them AFTER going completely offline (and I _think_ we only see the videos / hear about them after they went underground, am I wrong)?
2) OK, maybe the short guy and not Joe is leading the military, my mistake. My point is that IMHO it is not credible that AI professor, engage with only AI throughout the better part of the movie, suddenly has a saying within a military strike against PINN. I mean the military is be definition a very hierachical organisation, outsiders like Joe would have, at best a consultant position but certainly not the influence that Joe has.
3) Of course it is science fiction, but again, that's not my point: we see a huge number of servers with almost certainly a huge number of cores that make up PINN. PINN needs a very long time to be able to "simulate" / contain a human mind. And a fraction of PINN (i.e. a teen tiny number of cores compared to PINN) calculating for a very short time are all of a sudden able to analyze Will's mind? I find that implausible and therefore stand by my point that this is a hole in the plot.
4) Of course you are right, there was no reason to give Evelyn the virus. As you said, why not give the virus to one of the hundreds of anonymous volunteers that where being assimilated? But I never said that the three points mentioned in my first statement where an exclusive list of all the plot holes (-: This in turn proves for me: there quite a few holes in the plot.
