I really enjoyed it. Of course a biopic, any biopic, is much more engaging if you want to know about the character portrayed. Maybe I had a bit of an advantage not knowing very much about Tolkien. Just the basic facts that I gathered from some documentary on one of the LOTR bonus discs. I am sure there is some artistic freedom involved and that facts are sacrificed on the altar of drama.
It was interesting to see where the ideas for his stories originated from. I wouldn't have minded some added running time to help adding more depth to certain aspects.
Like everything it is a matter of taste but all things considered one of the better movies I watched this year.

Absolutely amazing movie. I enjoyed it much more than what I was expecting. It was a great surprise. It had great music and I had tears many times. I have no special connection to Tolkien, never read his books. This is just a great movie on its own and it is for everyone regardless of if you know who he is.

Not knowing much about Tolkien’s life, I like experiencing this the way it is done.
The war scenes - oh, so he sees himself as Frodo, with a high impossible task … and his squire, Sam.
Then… the headmaster at first seemed an inspiring source for Gandalf, although really just in the first scene.
The four friends… ah, Marry, Pippin, Sam and again, Frodo?
Edith… is she Galadriel? Or maybe Arwen?
The priest seems to have inspired Bilbo.

Funny, how “Sam” would mention there’s a problem with there not being any women in “Tolkien’s” books  there really barely are any worth mentioning, we all know that.
When they’re running through the hallway at around 25 minutes it looked like they were bumping into Aragorn.
Either way, I get all teary from youthful, deep friendship like that.

When they talk about Wagner, and how it shouldn’t take six hours to tell the story of a magical ring… I giggled.

For some reason, I had been under the impression that Tolkien wrote most of TLOTR imprisoned. However, that was never mentioned, and does not show up anywhere online either. Strange, I was so convinced. Maybe I was thinking of Wilde.

I'm not a biography reader so I have no idea how much of the movie is accurate. I assume most is not but is a reasonable facsimile of the truth.
I enjoyed this movie - it was interesting to find out a bit more about who Tolkien was, his background, and how he ended up creating his famous works.

Actually pretty good. While it was a little stuffy at times - as befits the period - it told an interesting story, and it was a very well made film. Of course, it may have paid artistic licence, but as i don't know much about Tolkein, other than his works and his faith, I bought into most of it.

Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins lead the cast in the J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien. The film looks at the formative years of J.R.R. Tolkien’s life; growing up in an orphanage and making lasting friendships that would inspire him. Both Hoult and Collins give strong performances, and director Dome Karukoski uses an interesting visual style that makes allusions to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings mythology. Still, the plot is pretty formulaic and doesn’t hold that many surprises. Yet despite a few weaknesses, Tolkien is a compelling look at the man behind one on the most influential novels of the twentieth century.

I was very disappointed by this movie. Acting was fine but it felt like it was a waste of time and way too long. Photography was nice as well as some facts one can learn about Tolkien (especially how to pronounce the name) but otherwise should have been even more interesting.

Imagine the _Lord of the Rings_ trilogy written by Danielle Steel and you have an idea of what _Tolkien_ is like.

I thought I knew nothing of Tolkien's life and turns out I'd known everything all along. He had good times, he had bad times, he knew war, he knew peace, he felt love, he felt heartbreak... The real tragedy here is that the story of such an innovative man is so uninspired.

Re-watch _The Wall_ instead. It has the same themes (war, love, orphans, children, artistic expression...) but is 110 times more creative. (Besides, I like the thought that _The Wall_ is A Tolkien biopic.)

This was a wonderful movie in regards to Tolkien's early years; prior to writing the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings which he is most known for. I enjoyed the performances of Both Nicholas Hoult as well as Lily Collins

The works of Tolkien are seminal and this film tries to pull gently from his first 24 years the threads that may have begun the weave of those later writings. It is also a story of the love within a brotherhood. And, the love of Tolkien for Edith Bratt, played beautifully by Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins. It’s a quiet film with beautiful photography, music and performances and it takes its time to interlace the emotions and images, so this is not a movie for the restless. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10. [Biographical Drama]

The end is better than the rest of the film, so even if it is a bit slow, stick till the end, you won't regret it.
