This is either the most bizarre film noir or the darkest dark comedy. Either way, it's entertaining from start to finish.
I'd like to compare this to _Naked Lunch_ (1991), but that doesn't capture the serious tone. The movie is a swirling fever dream of sex, death, and insanity.
Set in the 1950s, the movie doesn't have a real plot to speak of, it's more about the trouble an unhinged brother and sister find themselves in.
Great performances by all. All aspects feel authentic to the time, from the music to the dialog. In lesser hands, this would come across as boring, but there was not a second within where I wasn't ready to see what would happen next.
I don't know who I'd recommend this to, since it doesn't have any elements I can really pin down to any crowd. I'd want to say somewhere between old Cohen Brothers movies, and David Lynch. I don't know. Weird, but still rooted in reality - albeit a very strange reality.
Even though the main actors all play their parts to perfection, the standout for me was Sheryl Lee. Lee was enough of an angel to be nude in almost every role she played and this is no exception. Truly underrated, and this may be my favorite movie from her.
