The Lon Chaney, Jr. classic Universal Monster Movie The Wolf Man is a provocative tale of a man’s struggle against fate. While courting a young shopkeeper Larry Talbot is attacked by a werewolf, and is told by gypsies that he has taken on the werewolf curse and will become a killer. Co-starring Claude Rains and Bela Lugosi, the film has a strong cast. But the script is weak, and does a poor job of showing Talbot’s struggle to come to terms with his affliction. And, Chaney too has difficulty bringing depth to the Talbot character. Still, the make-up effects are quite good, and the score is able to create an impressive atmosphere mood. While it has some flaws, at its core The Wolf Man is a compelling and frightful film.

Not really the movie for me--boring story, dull acting, lacking in horror of any kind. The biggest problem is with the character of Talbot (and the acting of Chaney Jr, ugh.) He's a super creep with no redeeming characteristics, so there's no sense of identification possible from an audience perspective. I didn't feel sad for his desperation, I was just ready to be done with it.

"The Wolf Man" stands out thanks to its classic graveyard scenes, fog shrouded forests, and the performance of Lon Chaney Jr. Chaney plays a man cursed. He doesn't understand why it's happening to him. He's certain that he is actually a wolf man and those around him and their disbelief his outlandish story tears him apart. He really sells a man equally tormented by both the fear of his moonlit transformations and the slipping away of his sanity. Speaking of that transformation, it is underwhelming as this movie was made nearly 70 years ago. But, the sympathetic performance of Chaney makes up for this shortcoming. "The Wolf Man" isn't scary in the least, but its strong story made it the movie that brought werewolf lore into the mainstream.

“Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.”

The Wolf Man truly is Lon Chaney Jr's baby. Every time I rewatch Universal's the Wolf Man I still find myself as entertained as the first time I w More
