Broadway producer, Max Bialystock and his accountant, Leo Bloom plan to make money by charming little old ladies to invest in a production many times over what it will actually cost, and then put on a sure-fire flop, so nobody will ask for their money back – and what can be a more certain flop than a tasteless musical celebrating Hitler.

They really don't (can't) make them like this anymore. Funny, witty, and well acted from start to finish. Sure by today's standards its predictable, but its just so damn well done that shouldn't even matter.

Film 92 (Goal: 300) of 2024 Just a really well written comedy, at a time where comedy was still witty, and revered. The entire cast is great from top to bottom. Zero Mostel, who I don't recall seeing before makes what should be a completely unlikable character into borderline likeable. Gene Wilder, who is nominated for an Academy Award for this performance, is my least favourite character and performance in this film. Maybe I just don't get it but a sheltered accountant goes from having never committed a single crime, to boldly claiming he will assist in this major crime after only a few minutes. It's moments like this where the film falls down. The rest of the cast is also fantastic with Kenneth Mars crazed Nazi Franz Liebkind and Dick Shawn's campy rendition of Hitler standing out. I actually wish we got to spend a little more time with these characters, especially Shawn's L.S.D. The Producers is one of the beacons of really great, classic witty comedies. Another feather in the very large cap of Mel Brooks.

In reviewing this I'm not trying to count how Innovative or new or original this was into account, because I legit do not and can not know. So it felt like a boring old comedy and no its not once in a lifetime thing, and yes they still do make them. It's just some cheap comedy with a predictable story, good acting, and meh jokes. Very impressive for 1960s but for current viewers, meh. 5/10

Mel Brooks bursts through the gates of Hollywood, writing and directing a lasting favorite for his first feature film, but he had some trouble finding a willing dance partner. Major studios were reluctant to back this bawdy comedy, which sets a pair of unscrupulous theatrical types on the road to th More

THE PRODUCERS (1967) - Mel Brooks' first feature film starts with the funniest opening credits sequence I've ever seen - a monetarily motivated rendezvous between a serial Broadway failure and a sexually insatiable octogenarian - and then proceeds to get even more hilarious as it progresses.
