Near the end of the Korean War, a platoon of U.S. soldiers is captured by communists and brainwashed. Following the war, the platoon is returned home, and Sergeant Raymond Shaw is lauded as a hero by the rest of his platoon. However, the platoon commander, Captain Bennett Marco, finds himself plagued by strange nightmares and soon races to uncover a terrible plot.

A rather disturbing and effective political thriller. The way Lansbury so unapologetically takes advantage of her son is something to behold.

It's all very fanciful and a little feverish, but I can appreciate this attempt at embodying the Cold War paranoia of the times (so many sweaty lips.) Unfortunately, Frankenheimer is sort of a leaden director and most of the cast sleepwalks through the movie--Harvey maybe has an excuse, but Sinatra is deathly dull. The suspense never builds and it just doesn't grab me. Lansbury is a standout, though, and there's a lovely sequence at the end that reminds me of the editing style in JFK.

The editing is very 1950s in a bad way in a few places (disorienting cuts), but it's mainly just okay and a bit antiquated in that regard. I found that the drama lands, though, and they have two great leads in Sinatra and Laurence Harvey, the latter of whom possesses that extinct and uniquely urbane More
