I'm always a total sucker for these podcasts-on-film and The Listener is no exception. A series of vignetted phone calls to a Samaritans-style hotline is the star of the show here; no overarching narrative or thrilling subplot. Just character and human emotion brought to the foreground to be observed and analysed. I was ready to make reductive comparisons to The Guilty and it's subpar remake, but while that movie focuses on a singular caller and the thrilling narrative that surrounds them, The Listener is far more cerebral and fragmented. To be poetic, it's a mosaic of stories and human emotion to show multiple people at their darkest and lowest. It highlights the importance of just having someone who'll listen, and the often under appreciated people that offer this service. It's a little generic with the subject matter chosen for these phone calls, but I think they're effective enough to get across the movies central message of support and hearing people out, regardless of their background and current stances.
Most certainly won't be everyones cup of tea, but definitely pressed all my buttons, from the subject matter to the delivery method.
