There's a lot here to like, mostly on the filmmaking side of things. Camera movement, shot composition, subjective viewpoints, etc. The complete absence of intertitles was fantastic, and I appreciated the connection it forced to the material itself. I struggled with the acting styles, especially with Jannings, even in the context of the usual acting you see in silent films. And really struggled with the weird epilogue, which Murnau almost seemed to be apologizing for. It was bad.

_The Last Laugh_ is a film that stands out for its innovative use of cinematic techniques and its ability to convey deep emotions without relying on intertitles, except for two instances for the prologue and the epilogue.
