In the early nineties, before the massive gentrification of many of New York's then slums, several young people from very disparate backgrounds left their broken homes and ventured onto the brutal streets of the city. United by their love of skateboarding, they formed a family and built a unique lifestyle that eventually inspired Kids, a groundbreaking and outrageous film directed by photographer Larry Clark and released in 1995.

This documentary illuminates a surprising amount of depth around one of the most influential lurid films of all time. Kids is raw, flippant and irreverent but this documentary humanizes the characters in a remarkable way. Definitely recommended.

I don’t think that the movie Kids was the main cause of the tragic ending of Justin Pierce and Harold Hunter but it is clear that the film didn’t really do them any favors. As a young skater in those days, Harold Hunter always seemed like the coolest and this doc solidifies it with the stories from his friends and family. Heartbreaking but with an uplifting ending. I dare you not to come out of this hating Larry Clark and that poser Harmony Korine.
