Drama

Kaoruko and Kazumasa Harima are a separated couple with two children. They plan to divorce once their daughter, Mizuho, enters elementary school. One day, they receive devastating news of their daughter falling into a coma after a near-drowning accident at a pool. The doctors declare her brain dead with no prospect of recovery and the couple must decide if they should donate her organs to others in need or to wait until her heart stops beating.

There's _so much more_ to this story than the parents' decision whether to consent to organ donation on behalf of their daughter. That's over in the first 15-20 minutes at most (best estimate I have after watching this half-asleep on a long flight), and the rest of the film is a wrenching character study of how their choice plays out over the following years. I was _not_ prepared for this movie, and wasn't really trying to predict it (because, as mentioned before, I was half asleep)—but that probably made the experience better. In my notes from the flight, I see my drowsy self gave this "9/10 for feels", so I'll just slap that rating on without overthinking it.

I quite didn't expect a plot like this. I really liked it. I could feel the struggle from both the mother and father side. On the technical side, great picture, loved the music and the peace. I recommend it a lot. so yourself a favor and watch it on its original Japanese.
