User Reviews for: The Farm

It occurred to me that a great premiss for a horror movie would be if a killer dispatched people in the same manner that humans do for taste pleasure, entertainment, experimentation, et cetera. Turns out someone had the same idea.
_The Farm_, simply put, is hillbilly horror - e.g., _The Texas Chainsaw Massacre_ (1974), _The Hills Have Eyes_ (1977), _Wrong Turn_ (2003).
If you've seen one, you'll know what to expect with this. However, there is a twist, and I don't know if the writer/director wanted to make a point or just thought it was a cool idea. I still maintain that the original Texas Chainsaw was very much a vegan movie.
The first act is very slow, as we are setting up our two main characters. The shots are mostly long takes (yes, single shots are an effective method of filming scenes, just ask Hitchcock or Carpenter). We even get a shot that holds on for several seconds, at a diner, of cow, and pig flesh cooking. A hint of what's to come? Probably.
Once our couple gets to the titular farm, that's where the movie picks up.
Now, the dialog is sparse, but really, what needs to be said? Hmm? What can often times ruin a horror movie is cliche dialog: "Why are you doing this to me? What do you want?"
To most people, I will presume this would just be seen as another gory film, but even just going by the reviews here, it's clearly making its message clear. All that is left is how the viewer will respond to it.
For me, it was much more affective than I ever would have imagined, since I am all too aware of the disgusting parallel whence it's pulling. If you know how the dairy industry works, you will get this. Mostly we are working with an allegory of how cows, specifically, are abused. Now, there is a scene with a baby that draws from a method called "thumping," with is what happens to piglets.
The movie has some gory moments, but not as many as I would have liked, given what it is talking about; it doesn't scratch the surface of what happens to those animals.

Now is really the time when I would add a post script, but this entire review could be a post script.
There is a brilliant review here, among the many scholars who took the time to share their lack of understanding for how punctuation works, which reads: "No matter how hard you try I'm not going vegan."
Allow me to translate: "No matter how hard you try, I'm not going to stop paying for animals to be abused."
Do you know who used to say he didn't care about animals? Me. Do you know who said he could never be vegan? Me.
I would recommend this movie to vegans, and fans of cannibal horror movies.
If you want to see a different kind of horror, watch _Earthlings_ (2005) or _Dominion_ (2018). If you rely on your hypocritical speciesism to help you compartmentalize, I suggest watching what happens to dogs at the Yulin festival.
Animals are here with us, not for us.
