This movie does not work well when watched from a nowadays point of view. But it is very good if you can transport yourself to the late 60s. Imagine sitting in a theater while watching the movie. It makes it feel different.

And there is more to it: Image sitting in a theater in the year of 1968: the Stonewall riots will happen one year from now, being gay and meeting other gays might get you arrested. The actors on stage risk the end of their carreer just by playing their part in the show. Men (and women) grow up with an aversion against everything homosexual. So if you happen to realize that you might be gay yourself, not only do you have to understand it for yourself, you have to actively work against your own prejudices against those people – because you’re one of them now.

All the hate against themselves and fear of living in a dismissive society is shown in this movie. But we can see all the glitter and glamour of this upcoming scene as well.

The movie starts funny, fresh and fast, but it gets deeper and – yes – sadder with time. The more the characters get drunk, the more open they become and layer after layer will be revealed.
