I've loved Marcel Pagnol's "Jean de Florette" for a long time, so I was excited to spend more time in Pagnol's vision of Provence. Whereas it traffics in some of the same themes (interpersonal dynamics in a small town, etc.), this one's not nearly as dark and is actually laugh-out-loud funny throughout. The wonderful actor Raimu plays the cuckold in denial, and it's fun to watch the assorted townspeople band together to find the wife and restore the town's access to bread. It's light and fun (except when it delicately turns to moments of tragedy) and I'm glad to have discovered it.
