Tetsuo: The Iron Man

So, this where I learned that psychedelic cyberpunk experimental film is not for me. Despite two excellent horror sequences (the subway chase scene and the initial scene where the woman tries to comfort the man come to mind) and very sharp stop motion animation, the lack of a clear narrative really pulled this one down for me. The meaningless gore and moralizing anti-sexuality were incredibly off-putting to me, even as a fan, albeit a casual one, of horror and exploitation films. I might be convinced to watch the other films in the series, but this one was, at times, torturous.

It was metal, that's for sure! Hyperactive, demented, surreal, and weird as fuck are adjectives I would use to describe this wild ride of a movie. Weird is my middle name but this maybe got too close to my limit? I just don't know what to make of most of it and I have to call it incoherent right here on the spot. So energetic it's like giving a whole box of Froot Loops to a kid for breakfast and then living with the consequences. The energy was maintained for the whole runtime and I understand now why this is only an hour because it was a lot. I love the use of black and white it looks stunning, dirty and gives the impression that everything is metal with the greys. Shaky cam all through out, the score is hypnotising, some hard to watch body horror, and very impressive makeup and effects. I have to mention the drill penis, that happened and i'll never forget it.
