It's easy to draw a parallels between this movie and the Hogan's Heroes TV show. There was even a court case that alleged that the show infringed on the IP, but it ended up failing. It's hard to not see the likeness as it is a very similar premise with similar characters using similar funny tricks to get around the Germans. It even has virtually the same character also named Sgt. Schultz. However, this is less of a comedy and more of drama with some comic relief.

Like Hogan's Heroes, there's something that feels disrespectful about having light-hearted comedic sections in a concentration camp movie. I'm sure POWs had plenty of fun during their time being imprisoned, but I can't imagine them kidding around everyday and playing games with German troops. It's not excessive but worth noting since it's such sensitive material. The humorous portions are balanced well with much heavier subject matter and there is reverence for death.

The acting is very good, even by modern standards. The script is outstanding and compliments the acting. Older movies tend to have really slow pacing, but you won't see that here.

Anyone that has a chance should watch this movie.
