There's really something quite magical about a movie like this. Just think that this even got created and people are accepting it with open arms the way they are. Can you imagine if this was taken back to the late 90's and shown to audiences? They would ask what the fuck's wrong with you. In concept, this film is very basic. Over 200 people were collaborated with and each recreated individual scenes from Dreamworks' animated film, Shrek. However, each person can do it their own way and completely unique style. The only connective tissue is the transitions between each and original score. The outlook is simple, but the result is a haphazard splodge of creativity that you can't help but admire and get soaked in to. I'm not kidding when I say this should be commended and respected among the greats out there. Despite it's bumbling aesthetic, the film is a joy to watch, because of it's ironic presentation and meme filled skits. Each segment is hilarious because of it's jarring change in tone and recreation, making this kind of experimental masterpiece that would only be accepted in small arthouse theaters. There's something that makes you ponder the human soul as you see the ending of Shrek done in an 80's VHS music video while Hot Dad's cover of "I'm A Believer" plays. What I commend 3GI industries and all the people involved is their commitment to make this ludicrous film get created and shared with the world. It really shows you the magic of the internet and how much society has changed in just two decades. It's absolutely crazy how our outlook on the world is this jumbled and silly collection of lighthearted lunacy, but Shrek Retold reminds me why I loved YouTube and what the internet can accomplished when banded together. This should be celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
