It ain't easy bein' green -- especially if you're a likable (albeit smelly) ogre named Shrek. On a mission to retrieve a gorgeous princess from the clutches of a fire-breathing dragon, Shrek teams up with an unlikely compatriot -- a wisecracking donkey.

When Shrek first came out I was so excited to see it, as a fan of fairy tales I love modern twists. I much prefer the sequel in actual fact, but the original is still highly hilarious and spins everything you know about fairy tales on it's head.

While I don’t think that Shrek necessarily deserved the Oscar for best animated feature (Honestly Monsters Inc should have won because of how much more timeless it is) It’s still not hard at all to see why this movie is still being referenced and quoted to this very day. This movie is a product of its time but it’s a really good product of its time and that’s thanks to its subversive story that defies a lot of expectations, humor that will delight kids and adults with how edgy the material is, great characters that are both funny and sometimes delightful, and animation that may be dated but will nonetheless transport you to a different kind of a fairytale world. This movie is perfect for those looking for a mean-spirited but also fun take on traditional fairytale tropes, especially those who need a break from watching traditional Disney flicks.

Shrek is a masterpiece! It helped subvert the Disney Renaissance formula with great humor and heart. Myers, Murphy, Diaz and Lithgow did a great job voicing the characters. Now that this film is 20 years old, I am glad it existed.

Eddie Murphy was actually funny in this. I mean he was 1980s Eddie Murphy style funny in this. It was like he was at the top of his game again.

It makes you miss Eddie. What we have today is not the glory that he once was.

But, beyond the great return of funny Eddie...there is a wonderful dark More

Poor old ogre "Shrek" just want to be left alone, that's all - he's got a bit of the Greta Garbo's about him. Rather inconveniently, though, nasty Lord "Farquaad" who has a little of the Napoleon syndrome about him, banishes all the fairytale creatures from his lands and so they turn up on the doors More
