I found this movie to be a very emotional retelling of the "prodigal son" parable from the Bible. I will concede that the movie may not have a huge appeal outside of its target audience (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) because of its niche and a limited theatrical release.

"Saturday's Warrior" is based on a musical production written in the 1970's that was quite popular among Mormons, even spawning a VHS release of the stage production that made the rounds in the late 1980's. I was not a fan of that version. However, I'm pleased to say that this version--produced by original creator Lex De Azevedo and including a couple of new songs written by him--tones down most of the cheesier and corny aspects of the VHS version. De Azevedo cut several well-known songs from the previous versions, but the two new additions are catchy and they fit the theme that the film seems to be going for.

I will admit I had extremely low expectations for this movie and was a bit hesitant to go when my daughter said she wanted to see this for her birthday movie. I've always liked the music and I knew the songs well from when my parents would listen to the soundtrack when I was growing up in the late 70's & early 80's, but I HATED the 80's video version. But I am pleased to say I felt this movie was well-done for the most part, and am willing to admit it actually brought tears to my eyes several times. It was interesting to watch this as a father and see the dynamic between Jimmy & his father differently than I did as a child. That, and the back story of the character Todd (something that would have been impossible on a stage) were the two most emotionally connecting parts for me.

Watch this movie with an open mind. Do that, and I think you'll enjoy it.
