One of the most important artists of our era, Ryuichi Sakamoto has had a prolific career spanning over four decades, from techno-pop star to Oscar-winning film composer. The evolution of his music has coincided with his life journeys. Following Fukushima, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan’s social movement against nuclear power. As Sakamoto returns to music following cancer, his haunting awareness of life crises leads to a resounding new masterpiece. RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA is an intimate portrait of both the artist and the man.

Ryuichi Sakamoto (♰2023) searching for sounds in the Arctic, capturing the silence of Fukushima, photographing the World Trade Center attacked near his home in New York, extracting the music of life and also of death. It's a reflective documentary that talks about composition from the restless gaze of a sound seeker, who quotes Paul Bowles ("Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well") and always returns to inspiration Bach's music. A composer without barriers who survived cancer to meet again with it.

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music isn’t always my cup of tea, but his creative process is so interesting that it doesn’t matter.
