Marion Stokes secretly recorded television 24 hours a day for 30 years from 1975 until her death in 2012. For Marion taping was a form of activism to seek the truth, and she believed that a comprehensive archive of the media would be invaluable for future generations. Her visionary and maddening project nearly tore her family apart, but now her 70,000 VHS tapes are being digitized and they'll be searchable online.

As someone who has a collection of shows and movies in their Trakt account, I really get this lady's motive. A very interesting watch, she was a visionary who did what nobody else was doing: Archiving television. If you have even the smallest collection of anything in this world, watch this documentary and see into the mind of someone who took collecting to the next level, and then another level beyond that. And then shared it to the world.

A must-watch. Marion Stokes, a very intelligent woman ahead of her time who understood the importance of archiving television. With numerous tv sets recording different channels 24 hours per day, she documented everything from commercials to news stories to bloopers to sitcoms. She created an unprecedented amount of tapes that hold information that would have been lost forever. As an archivist myself, I feel I understand this woman’s values and motivations. I hope the Internet Archive is efficiently digitising this huge collection.
