The R of the title stands for the young protagonist, Rune, fearlessly played by Pilou Asbæk. Imprisoned for violent assault, he's a cocky, good-looking young man placed in the hardcore ward, where his survival depends on quickly learning the prison's parallel world of rules, honor, and obligations. R also stands for Rachid, a young Muslim prisoner who becomes Rune's friend and accomplice, defying the rigid racial stratifications among the inmates.

I started watching the film without much thought about what the theme might be, other than that it was a prison movie. I was pleasantly surprised, as prison-related themes are often quite stereotypical. However, Tobias Lindholm, who directed the film, truly sets a different tone that is brutally dark and realistic. The film does not romanticize the time behind bars but highlights the harsh conditions and emotions that come with being imprisoned. A very powerful film, deserving of a 9/10 rating. Hats off to the dialogues, environments, and the psychology behind the characters in the film.
