High school athlete Cyd Loughlin lives alone with her depressive father in South Carolina, perpetually longing to get away from it all. When her aunt, famous novelist Miranda Ruth, agrees to host her for a few weeks during the summer, Cyd jumps at the opportunity. While there, she falls for a girl in the neighborhood, even as she and her aunt gently challenge each other in the realms of sex and spirit.

Quietly affecting drama that seems slight on the surface, but has much resonance lying deeper within. These are real people, and they are a pleasure and delight to be around. Heck, I wish I could be within their social circles! A hidden gem.

A mediocre coming-of-age film, Princess Cyd is pretty bland. The story follows a young teenage girl who goes to visit her estranged aunt, an acclaimed novelist, and learns to appreciate her cultured lifestyle. The script isn’t written very well and isn’t quite sure whose journey this is; the aunt’s or the niece’s. And the directing is fairly mundane, doing nothing to heighten the drama or add any tension. Princess Cyd is a forgettable film that’s rather boring and unremarkable.

This movie is so good, it made my heart full, it gave me joy. It’s not a simple sapphic love story, it has so much more, the details and developments from the relationships it’s really good to watch. It’s a hidden gem
