Perhaps a touch too much narrative and not enough acting, but a lovely work none the less. I love how in this movie most of the common mental health illness/ breaking points are being discussed, and joked on. It's always about how we view the world when it comes to mental illness, and the main characters together showed us how even we are in the same world, our world view can be vastly different, and that makes who we are. It's the most fun 100 mins I've had in any cinema house this year, and what a pleasant surprise it be from an Australian movie. 😊

I enjoyed the film, but not as much as Elliot's prior works for one simple reason: I loved how the narrator would seemingly explain things into existence and a near-mute character would simply go 'oh!' or 'eurgh!' Memoir of a Snail is Mary without Max: An entirely first person story that needs a little something more. I don't think I'd have liked Mary and Max as much if we'd only interacted with Max through his letters. Memoir of a Snail needed more Gilbert.

An engaging life story, sad and depressing for the most part, but full of funny little details everywhere. It never gets boring. This is stop motion animation with a pleasing detailed and semi-realistic visual style and colourful characters.
