Ventriloquists' dummies are creepy and they don't come much creepier than "Fats" the dummy of Corky played well here by Anthony Hopkins. Unless I missed something I don't believe we are sure if Fats is actually alive or not and I don't know if I'd prefer him to be. There are scenes in the movie that make me believe that he is but those assumptions could be explained away by the split personality of Corky. My favorite scenes were those that show Fats appearently moving on his own or did he? It's that sense of wonder that makes this movie the most fun. Burgess Meredith is great as the big shot agent of Corky. I've got a real soft spot for the guy and I've never seen him misfire in a role. Greatness thy name is Burgess. Ann-Margret is quite good as Peggy Ann but she is so appealing and magnetic that I couldn't accept that she would have any attraction to Corky who is a real mess. I also didn't buy that Duke (played by Ed Lauter) would have ever had a shot with Peggy Ann either. I think Ann-Margret was a bit of a miscast. Overall "Magic" had enough creeps and suspense and even though I question the choice of Ann-Margret the cast and the coolness of Fats the Dummy made it worth watching.
