Lemonade Joe

A Czechoslovak satirical musical of the Old West about the battle between Kola-Loca and whiskey. I had to watch this film on that premise alone. This did not disappoint. The theme song is so catchy and it makes some great scenes. I wasn’t expecting such profound themes and allegories to be presented. The fight between good and evil, separated families and the effects, and religious fanaticism are all alluded to. I’m impressed that a film as silly and nonsensical as this can have such an impact on me. Most of the Looney Tunes logic in this film is straight up bananas and I love it. I love the way some of the scenes were shot and edited. Specifically the trumpet/piano duet and the following shootout. It’s all over the place and yet it’s cohesive. Sure some of this movie hasn’t aged well, but it definitely deserves some praise.
