The movie is too inconsistent with its tone and its purpose. It somehow meanders until we get to a certain point - which at that time, is a bit too late to catch the audience and finally get some attention. The great performances of the whole cast can't help the unripe script.

A little bit more detailed with spoilers:
[spoiler] The fourth wall break happens one time awkwardly in the beginning. Then only again, it is hinted, but not pulled through, in the end during the house visit. It may show that the main character has changed, but that whole gimmick felt was never present during the rest of the movie and felt detached.
The storyline with Doug - I can't actually believe that he told him nothing - we know the motivation behind it, but even then it felt unresolved. We never see Doug again.
The storyline with her mother - ok - we'll accept that she suddenly wants a change in her life. But the ending, again, was just a byproduct. She died, no one was informed. What happened to her father? Again, a storyline that feels unresolved.

For the tone, I expected at first a movie about a romance from the past that will maybe ignite in the present. Or a movie about her love story in the past. Sometimes, the movie tries to be realistic, sometimes absurdist.

I gave it 5 stats because at least the emotions that were displayed - they felt true. Partly, because of the great performances and the direction. And also, it had some funny moments. And also, octopus.
