It's a deliberately paced slow burner that spends more time building atmosphere than moving the plot along - and that's the film's biggest strength. Miike is of course a masterful director and proves once again that he can tackle any genre and make it his own. Hara-Kiri (a term for ritual suicide that is primarily used in the western world, the term actually in use in Japan is Seppuku. Which is why the film is titled Ichimei (one life) over there) sets itself apart from the sea of samurai revenge flicks by focusing more on the WHY than the HOW.
