If you are looking for more monster fighting and less human story in this monster movie sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters meets you halfway. King of the Monsters embraces spectacle and vision over a compelling story. Previous complaints about Godzilla (2014), not showing the monsters enough, were heard and fixed in this installment. The special effects are awesome, seeing the monsters clash is visually breath-taking, and the monsters are more on screen. However, this all seems to come at the expense of a well thought out human plot. Humans are depicted on the screen just as much like the previous movie but, the motive for their actions is lacking. The rationale for the opening course of events makes little sense, family relationships are questionable, and the character choices often seem a tool used to move the plot along. Most annoyingly is the troupe father who will do anything at any time to save his family. This installment closely follows the classic monster movie formula which is, show monsters fighting - use humans as a senseless backdrop. If you are a fan of Godzilla movies there are some nice Easter eggs and callbacks to previous movies that you should find pleasing. I would recommend this movie if you like large action blockbusters, monsters, or if you’re, like me, just a fan of Godzilla. In any case, give it a watch!
