Decent adaptation of a superior graphic novel that had a very interesting take on the case. I expected a bit more grit from the Hughs brothers, but they still delivered a pretty good movie.

From Hell is an adaptation of Alam Moore's story based on the grim murders of the classic Jack the Ripper. Alan Moore notoriously hates all film adaptations of his work, and I tend to disagree with him. I personally love V for Vendetta and I like The Watchmen eventho it has it's flaws. But from Hell? Compared to his novel, this one feels flat. I can understand him why... It isn't terrible or anything, but it can be boring in the second half. It does take the setting serious with the dark nightmarish slums of London filth and skies as red as a pool of blood. It looks great. But the flow of the story is slow.

Film 157 (Goal: 300) of 2024: Having never read the graphic novel by Alan Moore, being interested and not well versed on the subject matter of Jack the Ripper, and being a Johnny Depp fan, I was eager to watch From Hell. A police drama, psychological horror that focuses on Jack the Ripper, his murder of a bunch of prostitutes, and the cop (Depp) that tries to catch him. I really enjoyed From Hell, especially the first two acts. The last 25 minutes drop the ball slightly as the film delves into almost supernatural territory. The reveal also wasn't what I hoped for. Otherwise the complete package outweighs the sum, and my own personal storytelling desires.

Coal-soaked skies and grime-caked slums serve as backdrop to this dark, grisly nineteenth century chase; Johnny Depp, unconventional police detective, in tireless pursuit of Jack the Ripper through Victorian London's back alleys. Frolicking in filth, _From Hell_ takes delight in sharing as much cent More

Great watch, would watch again, and can recommend.

If you're accepting or even intrigued by the case of Jack the Ripper, then this should be a great murder mystery for you.

Johnny Depp, opinions aside, does confused, drug-addicted, and detective all well. Heather Graham is able to emote and e More

I cannot say that I am an outright fan of old era British crime stories but I do fancy them now and then. This one is a rather dark, grim and gloomy story perfectly suitable as a evening movie at this time of the year when darkness already starts to come quickly and matches the candlelight mood of V More

I went into this having only seen 'The Book of Eli' by these directors, The Hughes Brothers. I quite liked that film, although I did feel their vivacious stylizations interfered with the telling of the story. Seeing this earlier film of theirs confirmed that suspicion, though it's still a fine film. More
