Like the first movie this one has also not aged well. A pity.

I like the “fish out of water” angle of “The French Connection II," but overall, the movie doesn't come close to matching the quality of its excellent predecessor. Far too many scenes end well after they should. And while Gene Hackman is still good as “Popeye” Doyle, he doesn't get all that much interesting material to work with. The interplay between Doyle and his French colleagues doesn't exactly provide much tension either. Furthermore, the change in the director's chair is also noticeable. I at least found the presentation rather boring. And even though Marseille is an interesting location, New York was much livelier in the first installment. Overall, unlike “The French Connection," this sequel is not worth a recommendation.

Starts of good (I liked the change of setting) but it goes downhill once the heroin addiction kicks off.

The original French Connection is a classic, with great pacing, action and acting performances, especially from Hackman, who was far and away the better choice for the role than the other actors considered at the time. But the sequel really drags, and nothing much happens for, what seems like, most of the film. Popeye bickers with the Marseilles police chief, gets kidnapped and strung out on drugs, goes through what seems like an inordinately long recovery period on screen and then eventually closes in on the bad guy. This one could have been cut down to 90 minutes. Also, is it just me, or did Popeye seem like less of an asshole in the first film? He was a real dick here and not sympathetic at all as the "hero."

**Better than the first!**

This action packed sequel moves like a runaway train! William Friedkin's film was excellent - yet contained too many scenes of people sitting in cars watching other people go in and out of buildings - the stakeout scenes bring the film to a halt. The scenes were integra More
