My first reaction to seeing this film is that it was great to see Robert De Niro playing in a serious role after two decades of (almost completely) mediocre movies. I mean, who was picking his scripts? Was he short on money? Anyway, as you probably know, the film is *fine*. It does bring a lot of things together at the end, and the last 20 minutes are really enjoyable. But the rest of the movie is rather pedestrian, and I think that has a lot to do with the casting of De Niro. He doesn't do pedestrian well. We probably needed to have a little more insight into the character during the middle of the movie, and that just wasn't there. A better movie with similar themes would be About Schmidt, or if you are looking for a more recent example, His Three Daughters.
