Do You Like Hitchcock isn’t half bad! Sure… You could say there should be more visual flair and stunning cinematography in an Argento film, but given this was a low budget TV production, I’d say he did well. There’s some rather impressive camera work mixed in here, and both light and shadow are used quite well. I also really like the gorgeous Torino neighbourhood featured in most of the film. Great work by whoever scouted that one out. I haven’t seen this film since I bought the DVD about 15 years ago, and this time I was actually surprised how well this one looked compared to a few of the other “later” Argento films. The looks are certainly not what let this film down in the end…

The story is not typical Argento, but leans so heavily into comparing events to Hitchcock films, it actually ends up feeling like one. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, but I actually feel this could have been so much better with a little more effort, but I guess a low budget hampered things a bit, and this is the end result. Perfectly OK story… that is a tad bit too predictable.

Do You Like Hitchcock has loads of stunning women and an absolute pillock of a protagonist, and not one of them can act. I’m not sure what the standard is for Italian TV actors, but the acting in this film was so flat and boring, one might think this was an amateur play at the local community centre. Absolutely horrendous!!

The music was there, but I can’t remember a single time I actually noticed it. Some might say that is a good thing, but I actually like to hear it from time to time. The weird thing is that Pino Donaggio usually makes great scores you really notice…

In any case, this is not the worst of later Argento by far, but the budget really made Do You Like Hitchcock less than what it could have been. If you can stand the amateur acting, you should give this one a chance.
