Saint Pauly says...

Rather than a biopic about the legendary jazzman who invented hot jazz and performed with the likes of Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, we're subjected to the story of how easy his life was during the Axis Occupation of France during WWII. He was saddest not when he watched the Nazis burn the encampment of his fellow "gypsies", nor when the Germans shot his mentor in the head, nor even when he abandoned his pregnant wife and elderly mother on the side of a mountain so that he could escape alone to freedom. No, his saddest moment in the film was when soldiers killed his pet monkey. To complete the insult, just before the credits roll, the arrest photos of many exterminated travelers are shown, as though the film were about them. The hypocrisy, like this film, infuriates me.
