Just didn’t connect with this one. Wonderful idea, but the main character felt vapid and uninteresting to me. What I did like was seeing (what I assume was) the inspiration for the La La Land song, which is a movie I enjoyed much more.

@soonertbone Indirectly:

. **"The Young Girls of Rochefort"** (original French title: **"Les Demoiselles de Rochefort"**) is directed by **Jacques Demy**. Agnès Varda, who was a significant figure in French cinema and Jacques Demy's spouse, did not direct this film. However, Varda and Demy often collaborated and supported each other's work throughout their careers.

---
---

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXEwmrP_E68
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_jaXaQvL1s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5KAmPDg8qA

"The Young Girls of Rochefort" and "La La Land" share several thematic and stylistic connections, as "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle has cited Jacques Demy's work as a significant influence. Here are some key connections:

1. **Homage and Inspiration**: "La La Land" pays homage to "The Young Girls of Rochefort" through its vibrant color palettes, musical sequences, and romantic themes. Chazelle has explicitly mentioned that Demy's musicals were a major inspiration for his film.

2. **Visual Style**: Both films use bold, bright colors and meticulous set designs to create a whimsical, almost dream-like atmosphere. The costumes and sets in "La La Land" echo the vivid and stylized aesthetic of "The Young Girls of Rochefort".

3. **Musical Structure**: Both films are musicals that integrate song and dance into the narrative in a way that feels organic and essential to the storytelling. The opening sequence of "La La Land," with its large-scale, choreographed number on a Los Angeles freeway, is reminiscent of the elaborate dance numbers in Demy's film.

4. **Themes of Love and Ambition**: Both films explore themes of love, dreams, and the pursuit of artistic ambition. The characters in "The Young Girls of Rochefort" dream of escaping their small town for a bigger, more exciting life, similar to how the protagonists of "La La Land" chase their dreams in Los Angeles.

5. **Bittersweet Endings**: Both films have bittersweet elements in their conclusions, balancing the joy of artistic and personal fulfillment with the reality of unfulfilled romantic relationships.

These connections highlight the enduring influence of Jacques Demy's work on contemporary filmmakers like Damien Chazelle, showcasing how classic films continue to inspire new generations of artists.
