A young and fiercely independent woman, Carmen, is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother. She survives an illegal border crossing into the US, only to be confronted by a lawless volunteer border guard. When the border guard and his patrol partner Aidan become embroiled in a deadly standoff, the pair is forced to escape together.

Like puberty: passionate and awkward and earnest and messy and carnal and ridiculous and it short circuited my brain and went straight to my balls of fire. I am, evidently, willing to overlook many things in a movie (melodramatic dialog, inconsequential characters, romance...) if the images are pretty and the dancing is cool.

It reimagines the story of Carmen based on the novel by Prosper Mérimée and the poem "The Gypsies" by Alexander Pushkin, mixing it with references to the musical adaptation of "Carmen Jones". It ends up creating a representation that absorbs magical realism to introduce flamenco and African sounds, a fascinating mixture of elements that in the end don't quite fit together. The music, created as a Greek chorus that dialogues with fragments of Bizet's opera libretto, adds an unreality that makes it more attractive. It is an irregular film but with some singularly beautiful moments.
