I have seen hundreds of films, and this is the one that was most difficult for me to understand 100% in my entire life. Not because it is weird but because it doesn't help you understand it at all. But I think I could do it after a lot of effort (and trust me... I have seen a lot of weird and complex shit). Probably 9

A dirty, decent crime thriller but nothing to write home about. BUT: What was that ending about? After the plot is done and over, there's exactly 10 minutes of nonsense about some guy on a rooftop throwing fireworks and police trying to stop him. WTF? Is this something only Chinese get? Was that supposed to be funny or reflect on something that happened earlier? Confused.

Black Coal, Thin Ice is a movie that loves being a movie, that not only owns the fact it's a movie, but revels in it. The colors, the shots, the film noir story... everything about Black Coal, Thin Ice is reminiscent of classic movies except its totally modern sheen. If you ever forget what it is you love about cinema, Black Coal, Thin Ice is here to remind you. PS. Be warned, only me, the Spanish guy in the comments and the jury at the Berlin Film Festival liked this movie, so for sure you won't. :grimacing:

OK, so yes - this is a very slow burn a times with far too many establishing and shots of decaying urban industrialisation, but when the action does actually focus on the story it's not a bad crime drama at all.
