In 1840s England, palaeontologist Mary Anning and a young woman sent by her husband to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship. Despite the chasm between their social spheres and personalities, Mary and Charlotte discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realisation that they are not alone. It is the beginning of a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both lives irrevocably.

Waves crashing against rocks. A violence of nature that extracts fossils from the past. This subtle, silent relationship also hides the confrontation with the conventions, the clash of social classes so different that they seem like those sea monsters in struggle represented in the paintings. The beach is the space of freedom, but you also have to fill up with mud to build something together. Love against rules.

A quiet, meditative film that lulls you into its rhythm. A nice mix of history (Mary Anning was real) and fiction (we know nothing of her love life). Not for everyone and nothing unmissable but I really enjoyed it and could see myself viewing it again one day if in the right mood.

Much like its protagonist, 'Ammonite' is a film that initially keeps you at a distance - but this is a deliberate decision, one that makes the embrace of the final act all the more powerful. This isn't a sweeping story of passionate love, but a journey back to love, and a journey with an unex More

This is a beautifully crafted piece of work from Francis Lee and Stéphane Fontaine that depicts the rather downtrodden existence of 19th century English paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) who spends much of her time combing the beach for shells and fossils that she restores and sells in a sm More

I'd be lying if I told you the movie swept me of my feet. But I enjoyed it nevertheless, more for what it was then for the story itself. Let me explain.
It is a quite movie that uses very little dialogue and pretty much relies on picture and acting performances. The scenery and costumes are gre More

I think I'm going knock this movie because I didn't like it at all, and I was right to be biased before I watched it.
I'd say the worst Sapphic movie for me after "La vie d'adele", so let me explain right away why.
For me, emotion in movies is definitely something that come More
