I watched Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville because of a post that I saw in this group.

It was a very captivating movie that was part neo-noir, detective story about a man entering a strange new world and part science-fiction dystopian tale almost Orvillian in it's nature.

The movie is shot entirely in black and white and looks absolutely beautiful. The narrative carries it's detective and sci-fi elements as the story is about a secret agent going undercover in a futuristic city on a different planet where everyone is under dru*s and their lives are ruled by the whims of logic operated by a super-computer called Alpha 60.

It shows and lets you feel the effect that this computer has on everyone in their everyday lives by contrasting it with the character of Lemmy Caution. Lemmy has come from our world, in the start of the movie he is all about business, the man has a mission. But as the movie goes and Lemmy feels just how much the Alpha 60 city is under the control of the super-computer with the same name that he starts to breakdown. Lemmy falls in love with the daughter of the professor he's been asked to find and k*ll, he tells her poetry and he tells her he loves her. She begins to fall for him too even though love is a forbidden word and she does not even know what it means.

Alpha 60 as it calls itself, operates solely on logic. It does not see it to be illogical to send people to die because it says "those who are d*ad can no longer cry" so there is nothing wrong in it. It believes that people who are going through a hard life deserve logically a different religion to believe in than a religion that well-to-do people follow. Like this, it believes humans to be just another mathametical problem, just something to solve and it seems in them misery and a need to elevate that misery. Everyone in Alphaville take these drugs called "Tranquilizers" that sooth them and make them indifferent to everything, it keeps them dull and happy with s*x and work. It does not believe in poetry, love or compassion, to Alpha 60 there is only one thing logical and that is power and those who can't have it must be told what to do and those who don't obey it but are weak must die.
