Anti-war film with the standard homages to PTSD, domestic struggles, IED's, kids and ethical dilemmas so you know I'm gonna come in swinging. This movie centers around a court-case so is like a Danish "Rules of Engagement" but in Afghanistan. It is nice to see that they used actual veterans who knew what they were doing on a tactical level but on the operational level not really. No pre-mission briefing, no mention of vehicle assets, or artillery. Literally just infantry with seemingly no support. There's a RAVEN call sign that sounded like ISR UAV which probably would've both notified them when Taliban snuck into the village at night, but also during the attack during the day, as well as during the patrol and IED discovery. Even if ISR wasn't on station- any nearby ISR would've been re-directed once the firefight began. This makes it even more odd that the medevac and the air mission appeared out of nowhere. Furthermore, anticipating an ambush, they should've had those assets prepared ahead of time, because they were already at that village before and met the family, both an ingress and egress route, plus the medevac area also should've been mapped out before, as well as pre-planned and discussed reactions if they got into a gunfight in one of the directions when they established 360 security or if not enough for men that (seemed squad or at most platoon-sized despite all the radio traffic) then overwatch from higher ground. Instead everything was very adhoc, which still worked and looked realistic but all of it should've been covered on the briefing before even leaving the compound. Personally I think if this was Special Forces, they probably would've just let the family loose, and use them as bait all night. And ambush the ppl trying to ambush them. But this is all scripted ahead of time so the point is moot. The writer is trying to prove a point by forcing the issue- in doing so they made an ethical dilemma that wasn't one to begin with. None of his men saw ppl shooting anywhere and he randomly just picked a place to drop a bomb. IRL the bomb might've stopped the shooting for one to five minutes or so but the hardened Taliban would've pressed the unit and continue the attack, knowing they had them surrounded and aiming to wipe them out.. instead the attack literally just disappeared along with the bomb. The CO fucked up big time and bent the ROE's then lied about it. So at least from a situational perspective it stinks but from a realism perspective it's alright.
