I think one of the laziest critiques of a movie is to say that "nothing happens in the movie". In general that phrase is meant to say that nothing _obvious_ happens. I've loved a ton of movies where "nothing happens", because what really happened wasn't meant to be something consumed near the surface. There is a thought or a theme that the movie is trying to get across and it asks the viewer to work a little bit to get the reward. In this movie not only does nothing happen, I can also say that nothing _interesting_ happens. There is an effort to discuss class but this seems kind of secondary to seeing the characters shuffle through one scene after another. Maybe I just wasn't meant to watch period pieces - I thought the same thing of Barry Lyndon (although that movie was worlds better than this one). The only reason my rating wasn't worse is because of the fantastic acting that was done with this lousy script.
