I had written off Bresson, but thought this was memorable and fantastic. I love watching process in motion, and this recalled movies I've loved like All Is Lost. Character is slim and plot is mostly not important--what unfolds is the process of human ingenuity and devotion in a way that feels more far-reaching and spiritual than it would be in another director's hands. Very glad I saw this.

I find it truly fascinating how the film's almost total absence of establishing shots does not prevent us from understanding the plot. Bresson, as did Carl Th. Dreyer and other filmmakers, has shown that narrative and direction can be just as effective, if not more so, than an abundance of situational shots. It is a shining example of how cinema can tell a story in a unique and memorable way. It is also worth noting that Bresson believed in an austere, minimalist style of filmmaking, far from pompous sets, where traditional acting, with professional actors, often came across as artificial and affected. For him, the camera and its ability to capture reality were essential to telling a story. Or to put it another way, if the world is a shadow on the wall of the Platonic cave, the cinematograph allows us to go back to the reality of the Idea, because it captures that shadow; it does not imitate it.

A prisoner with plenty of time, dedication, resourcefulness, courage, patience, equanimity, a purpose in life, a feared enemy, awaiting his execution squad and minimal resources can't be detained forever. That much becomes obvious. The story is great. It shows history. Him commenting his actions is wonderful. I like how quiet and slow the movie is. Good they refrained from any action elements. It still looks good in b/w. The only negative aspect are the Germans: Nazis are pigs but even they managed to speak German. Some soldiers in that movie speak pseudo German - that's not very immersive. Greatest scene: he kills the guard but it ain't shown. You can't even hear it. But his face tells everything. And then he and the boy he has saved just walk away. Without any further comment. Amazing. I wish every movie could end like that.

The original title of the film is Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut.

Probably my favourite film from Robert Bresson, this tells the story of "Fontaine" (François Leterrier). He has been arrested by the Nazis on charges of spying and bombing, and is imprisoned without trial. His prognosis is not very good, but he is determined not to succumb to the fear and intimidat More

You can see much of where Tarkovsky got his patience from. The ending is given away by the title but somehow the last half hour / escape sequence is still, to quote another reviewer, unbearably suspenseful. I much prefer this Ian Curtis performance to anything he did for Joy Division.
